If we want a "General Purpose" robot that can enter any building and perform any task, it must fit into this pre-existing infrastructure. A wheeled robot cannot climb a ladder to fix a valve. A drone cannot turn a heavy wrench. A humanoid, however, can leverage the same tools and environments we do.
2. The Great Convergence: 2024-2025
We are currently witnessing a "Cambrian Explosion" in humanoid robotics. The convergence of high-torque motors, high-density batteries, and GPU-accelerated AI has moved humanoids from the laboratory to the factory floor.
The Accessible Standard: Unitree G1 and Go2
While specialized research humanoids can cost millions, the Unitree G1 has disrupted the landscape.
- Foldability: Can be carried in a backpack (compact transport).
- Robustness: Capable of 360-degree joint rotations, allowing it to "twist" out of falls.

3. Humanoid Kinematics: The Tree of Life
A humanoid robot is a complex Open-Loop Kinematic Chain (or more accurately, a tree).
Degrees of Freedom (DoF)
- Base (Pelvis/Torso): Usually the "Root" of the robot.
- The Bipedal Leg (6 DoF): Hip (3), Knee (1), Ankle (2). This structure allows the foot to be placed at any position ($x, y, z$) and orientation (roll, pitch, yaw).
- The Humanoid Arm (7 DoF): Shoulder (3), Elbow (1), Wrist (3). Why 7? 6 is the minimum to reach a point. The 7th DoF (Redundancy) allows the robot to move its elbow without moving its hand—essential for reaching into tight cupboards or around obstacles.
The Support Polygon
The most critical concept in humanoid stability.
- Definition: The area on the floor enclosed by the robot's feet.
- The Rule: As long as the projection of the Center of Mass (CoM) stays inside the Support Polygon, the robot will not tip over.
- The Challenge: A humanoid's support polygon is tiny compared to a car or a four-legged dog. This is why humanoids require "Active Balance."
4. Analytical Research: Morphological Trade-offs

Finger Count: 2 vs. 5
- The Case for 2 (Grippers): Extremely robust, easy to model, powerful.
- The Case for 5 (Anthropomorphic): Extremely complex, prone to mechanical failure, but allows the use of unmodified human tools.
- Research Problem: Can we use "Soft Robotics" (flexible silicon fingers) to simplify the control math while maintaining the dexterity of a human hand?
Upgradability and Modular Morphology
Modern platforms like the Unitree G1 are beginning to explore modularity. Can we swap the feet for wheels for high-speed corridor travel, then swap back for stair climbing?
